The City of Strasbourg was annexed by France during the reign of Louis
XIV of France. Since 500, the area had been predominantly populated by Germans and they
fought efforts to have French language and customs imposed upon them. Both Alsace and Lorraine
were ceded to the new German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War.
